Rwanda Timeline:

  • 1919-1962 -- under Belgian rule
  • 1929-- all positions of power held by non-Tutsis (Hutu) were taken and given to the Tutsis
  • 1933-- identity cards issued to all Rwandans
  • late 1950s-- Belgian powers shift in favor of the Hutus and Tutsis are driven into exile-- many Tutsis killed
  • 1961-67-- exiled Tutsis organize and launch guerrilla attacks
  • 1962-- Independence from Belgium; Hutus remain in power
  • 1973-- Tutsis banned from secondary & higher education; also public office; identity cards still in place  (1973-1994-- Habyarimana (Hutu) government)
  • 1994-- President's plane shot down; genocide of Tutsis

  • Life expectancy: male: 48.56 years    female: 51 years
